Internships

The application period for DeFiore and Company’s Spring internship program is now closed.

Our internship operates on a seasonal calendar:

Fall Internships: September – December
Applications accepted: July 1st – July 31st

Spring Internships: January – April
Applications accepted: November 1st – November 30th

Summer Internships: May – August
Applications accepted: March 1st – March 31st

Our team is looking for individuals interested in learning about all aspects of the publishing industry. As literary agents, we work as liaisons between authors and publishers and have a comprehensive vantage on the industry. Our interns receive the mentorship and experience necessary to progress in the publishing industry, as we provide a strong understanding of the literary agency business and the publishing process–from query to submission to publication and beyond.

Candidates should be motivated, well-organized, responsible, and have excellent communication skills. Some experience analyzing and assessing written materials is preferred. Having a broad appreciation of literary works in both fiction and nonfiction and a desire to work in the publishing industry is a must. Interns should be willing to commit 15-20 hours per week for a minimum of three months.

To apply for an internship with us, please email with a resume and cover letter to resumes@defliterary.com at Parik Kostan’s attention. Please be sure to include ‘resume’ in the subject line.

FAQs

Are you accepting new authors?

Yes, we are currently accepting fiction and non-fiction queries.

What if I've received another offer of representation?

If you’ve received another offer of representation and need a response sooner, please email us at submissions@inkstallion.com.

Does my project need to be finished before I find an agent?

If you are writing a novel, it is highly unlikely that we (or any other agent) will be able to help you before it is completed. In extraordinary circumstances (i.e., you are a public figure or have a newsworthy story) it’s possible that this can be overcome. Please let us know the completion status of your project in your query letter.

Do you prefer your queries by email or snail mail?

We accept both electronic and postal queries. Post queries must include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) or an email address for response.

May I query multiple projects at once?

It’s in your best interest to query us with the one project that you feel is most polished and ready for publication.

How do I know which agent to query?

Please visit our “About Us page to learn more about our agents, their interests, and their query guidelines.

May I query more than one agent at a time?

You may query multiple agents at DeFiore and Company at once. If you do so, please let us know.

How can I ensure that you received my query?

We aim to respond to all queries within four weeks, but due to the variations in the volume of queries and in our agents’ workload, we sometimes miss that mark and responses can be late or missing. If you don’t hear back from us within six weeks, the most likely scenario is that we read your query and do not think your project is right for us; but if you followed our guidelines and suspect there was a lost communication, we invite you to try us again. If you’d like to confirm delivery of your hard copy materials, please use Delivery Confirmation services from the Post Office (an extra 45 cents postage), or a tracking service such as Federal Express or UPS. Please note that due to heightened security measures, the US Postal Service will not deliver parcels weighing over 13 ounces that bear stamps. If you are submitting materials that you would like returned and they weigh more than 13 ounces, you must include a SASE with a postage strip purchased at a US Post Office if you’d like your materials returned safely.
